I am writing to express my extreme disappointment in your vote against gun control reform. I’ve always been under the impression that America is supposed to be a great country with great leaders (hey, that’s you!), and I can honestly say that actions such as this really make me seriously re-think whether it is, or you are.

The fact that anyone can buy a gun at a gun show, or on the Internet, scares the hell out of me. It terrifies me. In fact, my top three fears are guns, snakes, and poisonous spiders, in that order. I’m pretty sure you can’t do anything about snakes or spiders, but guns – guns you can do. You know, it must be nice for you to work in a place that feels secure, because the rest of us certainly don’t have that privilege.

And don’t say that there might be a gun registry created, because there won’t be. And don’t say that the paperwork is too much, because owning a weapon that can kill anyone at anytime SHOULD require some paperwork. And, this is a tough one for you all, I know, but oh my God, stop bowing down to an organization like the NRA that the majority of sane citizens see as extremely radical just because they have money. Gary Busey has money, would you do whatever Gary Busey said because he’d threaten to withdraw campaign contributions? I wouldn’t.

But here’s the thing – remember what I said about America earlier? You can still be those leaders. Please, please take this opportunity to prevent criminals and the mentally unstable from being able to purchase guns legally. There’s a part of me that is incredibly surprised that I have to beg you to do that, but c’est la vie.

I had a very specific dream last night and need help figuring out what it means, about me, about life, about what I want, etc.

• I put frozen mac & cheese in the microwave

• I get an email from Mary-Kate Olsen reminding me that we used to hang out when we were kids, and she’s in town and would like to hang out again

• She gets to my place, and it’s awkward because we’ve grown apart and we have nothing to talk about

• She leaves

• I get really sad that I forgot about the mac & cheese

This is a great resource for new puppet builders as it gives you basic shapes and ideas that produce amazing puppets, and when you feel comfortable you can modify the ones they provide to fit your needs. I traced both sides of this hand pattern and cut them out.

A Letter About Guns

Dear Barack Obama, Mitt Romney, and members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives,

First, let’s forget about our political affiliations. Let’s forget about how, the day after another mass shooting, CNN’s big story is about what seems to be a high school-esque catfight between RNC chair Reince Priebus and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. I know that both sides really want to win on every single issue nowadays, but this isn’t about winning. This isn’t about pride. This isn’t about whose version of any given bill is passed. This is about innocent people living in your country who, sure, can cast a vote, but don’t have the power to make laws. Or address a nation that needs to change.

I am one of those people. Every day, I leave my apartment, go to work, perhaps take a walk, come home, and on occasion, go out at night. And it terrifies me to think that at any juncture of my day, I could encounter someone who is in possession of a gun. Because it’s legal! I could be standing in line at the coffee shop behind someone who has a loaded weapon on his or her person. Now, I don’t know how that makes you feel, but it chills me to the bone. I find it unsettling to see someone using a gun on television, let alone to see one anywhere near me in everyday life.

So, what if aforementioned person in line at the coffee shop decided to use his gun? What if he’d been planning to for a long time? Hates coffee. There would be nothing that the rest of us could do. Some might say that in case such a situation might arise, we should all carry guns. We would be able to defend ourselves. But hey – what if person in line wasn’t able to purchase a gun in the first place? What if, and stop me if I’m getting too bonkers here, but what if no one had to worry about that because person in line didn’t have a gun either? We shouldn’t have to defend ourselves from ourselves; we just want to get a coffee (or go to the movies, or practice our chosen religion, etc.).

And hey, some people just don’t want to have to own a gun. Again, take me, for example. I would rather never go out in public, ever again, than purchase and own a gun. It’s true. No matter how violent my environment becomes, and right now it’s not violent but hey you never know, I could not and would not possess a gun. Or use it. I couldn’t. Even the thought of it makes me nauseous. It may seem like I’m being overdramatic on that last count, but we’re talking about owning a device that could kill a person. End a person’s life. And that person could be anybody – me, or my mailman, or that person who jogs down my street, or dozens of family members or friends who I can’t even bear to think about hypothetically right now.

But it’s not impossible, and that’s what makes me incredibly sad. And that’s what needs to change. Again, forget about party affiliation, and think about your family. Someday, I might have kids. And those kids are going to have to live in this country (unless I move to a place that feels a bit more safe). I don’t want to live in a country that has become desensitized to acts of mass violence. Or have kids whose school uniforms include a holster. Think about your young children or cousins or nieces or nephews. Kids play out in the street by themselves at a fairly early age, do you want them to have to carry weapons in order to defend themselves? I don’t. I am an adult person and I don’t want this for myself.

Kitten can haz adoption?

A couple weeks ago, my wife and I were walking our two dogs about a half a mile away from our house in Atwater Village (Los Angeles) when I spotted something small moving around in the bushes across the street.

Upon further investigation, we discovered that it was a small orphaned, black and white kitten (probably around three or four months old). I took hold of both dogs (and I also had our six week old daughter on my chest in a baby bjorn) while my wife spent a good 15 minutes trying to capture the cat. She eventually got it and we asked a few neighbors if they knew where it came from. They didn’t. So, we took it back to our place and decided to try and find it a home.

As my wife was walking up the driveway, the frightened kitten managed to squeeze out of her arms and run under my car. I spent a half an hour trying to re-catch it, but it eventually disappeared.

The next afternoon, my wife noticed the cat sitting in a small flowerpot behind our house. I tried to catch it again, but it took off over the neighbor’s fence.

The next day while I was at work my wife texted me “look who’s living under our house” along with a picture of the kitten poking its head out from a small hole near where our garden hose connects to the water pipes.

On my way home, I bought a couple cans of cat food and set them out for the kitten, along with a bowl of water. Since it decided to make our backyard its home, I may as well do my part and try to keep it fed.

Every time I tried to get near the kitten, however, it hissed and scurried away. I don’t know if it was born in the wild, or if it escaped, but it definitely saw me as a predator.

So every day I fed the kitten, and was hoping to take her to the Atwater Village cat rescue when they were open on the weekend. After a week of putting out food twice a day, I managed to trap her in a box and I took her to the cat rescue where I was told they were at kitten capacity. They gave me a list of shelters to call, and they were all either at capacity as well, or they told me that the kitten would be put down immediately because its so young.

Today, the kitten finally lowered its guard and let me get close enough to pet her. She’s a little dirty, but as soon as I started petting her, she purred like crazy. Now every time I go outside she runs up to me and wants to be pet and play. It’s heartbreaking.

I wish I could take this kitten in myself. However, my wife and I are dealing with being new parents right now, and we also own two dogs (that aren’t so fond of cats) and we are also moving to the valley in two weeks, so taking on a new pet is out of the question for us.

Since the kitten is letting me touch it now (and has become surprisingly playful all of the sudden) I’m going to try to take her to a vet this week, to have her checked out and make sure she’s doing okay, and to see if she’s even old enough to get fixed yet.

But if this kitten stays living outside, I’m not sure she will survive.

She needs a home.

Particularly, public employees – including teachers - in the state have lost most of their collective bargaining rights during Walker’s term, and over $1billion has been cut from public education thus far.
